Sophomore Lauren Ping and junior Katie Sigerud of Desert Vista High in Arizona took the top two spots in the girls varsity Division 1 and 2 race at the second Phoenix Classic at Crossroads Park in Gilbert. Ping covered the 5-kilometer layout in 17:24.24 and Sigerud ran 17:58.32 for Desert Vista, which won the team competition with a 40-52 victory over Perry High. Ping, who previously competed at Winona Cotter High, and Sigerud, who attended St. Michael-Albertville last year, also discuss the decision by the Minnesota State High School League not to hold a state meet and how the Minnesota State Coaches Association has organized a two-day event Oct. 30-31 in Atwater to allow the student-athletes the opportunity for another postseason competition.
